Hello,

So I've committed to purchase a white 2015 Transit 250 this weekend. High top, 148" wb, 3.2L diesel, empty cargo area (no previous build out), sliding door has a window (have seen them without), with 84K miles. The body/exterior is in great condition, tires are even still good . I'm paying what I guess is top dollar ($22K), but the seller is a trusted friend and a guy who takes care of his stuff. The price is in-between Edmunds and KBB values (on the 'private party' high end), so I feel ok about it.

I've never owned a diesel, so there will be a learning curve there. Oil has just been changed and the DEF fluid is full, not sure about condition of DPF.

I am looking forward to getting the cargo area set up for my needs (travel w/ motorcycles, general touring), and will be studying posts on this forum ... a lot :D.

Thx for reading,
ACE

Good luck with the new van! My current van is my first diesel and here are a few things I learned:

1. Get name brand fuel, and this fall when it gets cold ensure that you get winter fuel. Last fall I got fuel that was summer mix and it waxed in the fuel filter.

2. Replace the fuel filter every 30,000 miles (or more often depending on fuel) and purchase the tool to remove it. You can get both on Amazon.

3. Drain the water from the filter every few months.

I think you paid a fair price, there are not many diesels out there.

Congrats!

Read the starting instructions regarding glowplugs, follpw those instructions.
Use a good synthetic oil like Mobile-1 ($5/qt at Walmart in 5qt jugs).
Avoid extended idling.

I don't know if the Transit diesels are any different but on my F250 diesel when you put it into park the regen turns off within a few seconds. Also there is no way to tell when it is done. I got a message that a regen was starting but no message after that telling me if it was still running or if it had finished. I had an aftermarket digital screen that plugged into the obdii port that did give me all that information though. I only live 8 miles from work so 99% of the time I wouldn't finish regens. When I would get home I just put it into park and wait for a little while after the regen turned off to let the egt to cool down.

That sounds like a very good price, if in such good condition, maybe somewhat dependent on options (besides the window). The diesel was an expensive option. What general part of the country is it from? 20mpg in town is beyond what any of us gassers even dream of. Of course, the dash readout on my is 1-2mpg optimistic. But even 18 around town is quite respectable.

She's a GA gal :D, is set up for towing (hitch, T/H sw. on panel), has the camera on the mirror, not really sure what are options and what is std.

A few more runs in town has brought the mileage down to about 19mpg indicated. So, if dash is optimistic, maybe 17mpg is more realistic. That said, my '95 Explorer with the V6 that was std back then, only gets 16 - 17mpg around town. This will be fine for my intended use of the van.
@somekevinguy - have not seen the regen message lately, if I do and I'm done running around, I'll probably just let her idle a few moments before shutting off.

Thx all,
ACE

My van used to look like that inside.

It looks like some holes were drilled for shelving or tool boxes and that the holes were not treated with a rustproofed and painted. Probably a good thing you caught this early. Looking at the small amount of surface rust where the OEM floor has been rubbing, and around the perimeter, it makes me think I should get the floor and 6 inches up the walls coated in LineX.
