Replacing the huge center console with a Ford "slim" console

Post-purchase 67E Center Console Delete is happening! Picking up a "slim" console tomorrow, part # HK4Z-61044F58-AA ($161.40). I just finished pulling the "fat" console and its support. It can be done with a plastic trim pry tools and nut driver with 7mm and 8mm sockets.

  • Cupholder - clips only, pry, pull up and off, disconnect 12v socket
  • USB plate - clips only, pry gently to loosen from main body, leave connected to reinstall
  • Shifter bezel - clips top and bottom, pry gently, set aside to reinstall
  • Shifter boot - clips top and bottom, pry gently, leave on shifter arm to reinstall
  • Fuse cover panel below steering column - clips only, pull off and set aside to reinstall
  • Climate control bezel - clips only, pry gently to loosen, disconnect 12V, upper right clip includes a retainer strip that can be worked loose with a small screwdriver; I removed the two lower hex screws revealed but this appears not to be necessary, set aside to reinstall.
  • Open glove compartment door
  • Main console body - two hex screws by steering column, lots of clips to pry pull persuade loose, disengage USB plate to reinstall
  • Lower trim - two screw covers on either side of hump pop out easily with small screwdriver, remove two hex screws, right and left rectangular holes in the front have big plastic tabs - press these outward (toward the van sides) to disengage the trim, pull free gently, set aside to reinstall.
  • Support structure - remove two hex screws lurking in the bottom front, grab pull persuade loose, expect some crunching and minor cracks in this part that will be discarded.

85% success

The slim console just snaps right into place. Love the additional room in the cab. So easy, only a couple tips:
  • Drop glove compartment door to install right side clips
  • Snap shift lever indicator bezel onto boot frame before clipping boot frame to console.
So that's the good news. As I suspected, the Ford parts diagram does not show a couple assemblies that are needed to finish the job. A lower shield to cover the framing over the transmission hump is needed - the original one does not fit. The USB bezel from the original console also does not fit. But these deficiencies do not interfere with the functional improvement of expelling the wasted space and obstacle of the original fat console.

The fleet manager and parts specialist are intrigued, so maybe we'll figure this out. Ultimately, I can carve the old lower shield to make it work, and fabricating a flat bezel would be easy enough. But I'm holding out and researching for the the right parts.

I would have to confer with the navigator before doing this. On one hand she gripes "Why so many *&^% cup holders everywhere, huh?", on the other she seems to use the center holders a lot.

Also to consider - the tight-fitting Weathertech molded front mat is designed around the standard console. It's a similar situation to the cover over the transmission hump, plus any footing gained by slimming the console would be lost to the Weathertech raised lip.

Cool mod, however. Thank you for the research and play-by-play!

I have the Weathertech mat. I think the sides of any lower shield will still have good fit in the kickspaces. There would be a gap at the top of the hump if the correct shield fits tight to the frame. But it could just as easily have a pocket out to about the same distance as the original shield, which provides attachment for the bottom of the pocket in the old console which sticks out further above the lip of the Weathertech mat.

If I can't get the right part, the old lower shield can be made to fit with some minor carving. It also can be backed up by the lower part of the old support piece cut off from the upper part. The bottom of the old console pocket can be cut out with its clips and used as the backboard for a custom fitted flat plastic bezel.

Playing with search engines I found: HK4Z19C149AA

It's described as a lower bezel to fit the slim console. Nobody has any pictures or drawings. I'll bet it's the shield over the frame, tho'. For $22 it might be worth a try.

Key question for me, is, does this mod really give you more room to swing your feet through, when getting out of the drivers seat to go into the back? It certainly looks like it does (thanks for the pics!)
Can you confirm?

That is one of the numbers I found associated with "Fit Note: With Short Floor Console" which is mentioned with the main "cover". The callout number appears on the parts diagram that the dealership parts counter has, which shows the "slim console" but no associated shield or bezel. Did the page actually refer to "slim console"? What is the URL?

“With Short Floor Console”
HK4Z-61044F58-AA “cover” Callout: <042N54 this is the “slim” console.

HK4Z-14A099-AA “shield” Callout: 14A099 old lower shield
HK4Z-61044E44-A “support” Callout: <044E44B climate control support
HK4Z-61044E44-B “support” Callout: <044E44C function uncertain
HK4Z-19C149-AA “bezel” Callout: 19C149 looks like the original bezel
