Rattling noise under front-end of Transit (van is Quigley 4x4)

Hello all,

I'm trying to diagnose a rattling noise coming from underneath my van. The van is a T-350 Quigley, but I don't know if the rattle is related to the Quigley conversion or not. Only 3,500 miles on van.

The rattle seems to happen only when "coasting". In other words, when I am pushing the accelerator and the drive train is under load, the noise seems to go away.

It's possible that this noise only appears when the engine is not yet fully warmed up, but I can't say that with 100% confidence just yet.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Thanks!

I always think first of loose heat shields when I hear "rattling noise". Engine torque changing exhaust system position could account for it occurring only when coasting.

Thanks, Eiko. This definitely could be it. How would I go about confirming loose heat shields? Just getting under the parked van and trying to reproduce the rattle by shaking the shields?

Yes. Especially if you have an older van driven in salt states, the very thin metal / or connectors may have gone on to better worlds.

Thanks, I'll give it a look. While driving, the rattling seems to come from the vicinity of the engine, so I'm guessing it may be heat shields around the EcoBoost, rather than exhaust-related heat shields (?).

My van is low-mileage and has not (yet) seen salt, but I think there's a decent chance that heat shields could've been disturbed during various projects "under" the van.

Could be but check them all as the source of a car noise can be quite a fooler.

I have a similar rattle and also have an Ecoboost Quigley 4x4. If you find the source could you post it? I'm out of the country for a few months and won't be able to try and figure it out anytime soon.

My low mileage 2WD van also has a rattle. I crawled under the van to take a peek. After doing so, my top suspect is the exhaust heat shield. I'm going to fabricate a support or two for the longer section of shield. If you push on it with your hand, you will see how easily you can get it to vibrate/resonate. I can foresee how it's going to fatigue and crack after a few year, unless it better supported.

Also, on my van, the joint between the short and long shield section pieces needed to be persuaded [aka bent] into a better relationship because it was making noise when moved.
