Insulation -Spray foam?

I know someone who has a spray foam business, so I am tempted to go in that direction. If Inpre-wired everything, and went light on the foam, would it work well? Will it smell? Open or closed cell foam? Thanks!

I sprayed mine with the Dow kit available from Lowes, went lite on thickness and only coated the areas that are exposed to sunlight, so far I think it's great but I may not be a good test as I live in norther Virginia. For me, its worked very well, and because I went lite I can still run wires.

The idea of spray foam insulation has been discussed several times on this forum. Try the search box and you can read quite a few pros and cons.

If you go that route, spray a couple of lights coats instead of one heavy coat. There have been issues with the body panels warping when a heavy coat is applied.

Many have said there are many more negatives than positives.

Every one has an opinion.
Worked fine for me and I would do it again for walls and roof. but ....
I used a thin layer (about 1") to seal the inner wall and prevent condensation against the metal wall. (get all the nooks and crannies and run your wire first). Then I filled the remaining space (defined by the ribs and wall design) with thinsulate.

Seems to be very good for both sound and heat but it is hard to define a real test of what is best or better.

The difficulty of "do-overs" is what got it crossed off my list early on. I know me well enough to leave flexibility in the design for changing my mind.

Other than this, and taking care not to spray it into enclosed spaces that might deform body panels under expansion, it is probably the easiest and most complete insulator.

If I were making a van into a reefer truck I wouldn't go any other way. For an RV conversion, take time to think out every possible detail. Then, lather, rinse, and repeat daily for a week or two or more until you feel that every contingency has been planned for before beginning the application.

Spray foam has been known to warp the body panels. It doesn't show up right away and appears to be caused by the differing rate of thermal expansion between the foam and the metal. There is also potential for continued off-gassing.

All the best,
Hein

I spray foamed the inside of my van myself about two years ago with a kit that was claimed to be green with no off gassing. I did not get any distortion or off gassing. As someone who has done a fair share of body and paint work, the bodies are not exactly show quality to begin with. I filled the closed channels with thinsulate, (not sure if this did any good, according to some posts here) and ran my wiring through those ares or cut channels in the foam where necessary. The only great disadvantage, and it was a substantial one, was shaving down the foam to be level with the ribs. Very messy project, though you might avoid lots of that with someone who does it professionally and has better control of the spraying than I did.
