First off, let me state I am super happy with my Quadvan conversion and John's customer service after the sale. No issues at all there. I's do it again in a heartbeat. However.....
If you have the Ecoboost engine and get the Quadvan 4x4 coversion, BE AWARE that the new front axle drive components go right under the oil drain plug. So, when it comes time for your next oil change (assuming you do them yourself), you are in for a nasty surprise.
This whole issue can be avoided if you make sure you put in a Fumoto/Stahlbus valve before you get the conversion done (or have John do it?). If you don't do that, draining your oil is nigh well impossible without getting it everywhere after the stream bounces off the new hardware.
If you do find yourself in this situation, the shop vac connected to the oil addition port trick works wonderfully to quickly switch in a new valve without creating an oil slick. But, in general the situation is a serious PITA.
I hope this saves someone the hour and a half of swearing and 20 trips under the van I just went through.
Similar for my Quigley with eco boost. Not too bad, but it is impossible to not spill some oil. I'll be getting a Fumoto at some point. It's hard to remember when intervals are 8k to 10k miles.
That sounds like a) a miss on the part of QuadVan. I'd expect them to recognize that sort of conflict and fix it as part of the conversion. And b) you should give them that feedback if you haven't already.
I've had my oil changed twice at Jiffy Lube (different locations). They mentioned it being slightly messy one of the times, but they didn't make a big deal of it.
Is this one of those situations you can just use some sort of homemade deflector/funnel? I've had and seen cars where the factory setup makes a mess with the oil hitting equipment on the way down and going everywhere and you just place something under the drain for the oil to run down cleanly.
I suppose you could make a deflector, though it looks like it might still be pretty messy, especially given the "side exit" path of the oil in the ecoboost. Really, the best option is to put one of the valved drain plugs in there. Once I got the Stahlbus installed, it was an easy job draining the oil without spilling. The key is to know you need that valve installed BEFORE the conversion is done.
I’m having the quad van conversion done in April. Older threads show that the Fumoto 107 is the right fit. I never thought I would ask this here, but does the nipple size matter? They have the 107, 107N, 107S and 107SX. The main difference seems to be the nipple. I don’t understand how the quad van parts affect access to put a hose on the drain valve.
Dave, In a quick look, I'm not 100% sure how the 'sx' version works, but I think the 'n' would be fine. Any of them that continue the 'side exit' path would work. (I went with the Stahlbus version, and it worked great once I got it installed.)
The issue is that the new parts are a couple inches below the oil pan and directly in line with the oil plug (and path the draining oil would take). So, there's plenty of side clearance for the valve and nipple, and a good exit path for a hose sideways and then down. You could probably even work with a valve that had a 90 degree hose nipple, but that would be tighter, depending on how long the nipple was.
Hope that helps. If you need a pic, let me know and I can crawl under the beast and try to get one.
I made a mistake by believing the seller's list that said it fit the Transit 250 and bought a 120. Threads were totally wrong. 107 seem correct. Because of the side exit, you'd want the one with the straight nipple, not the 90 degree one, which may not fit the Quadvan. Slip on some tubing when you change the oil and you're done. Except for that awful oil filter change...I've used someone else's tip of punching a hole in it to let it drain before removing it.
I am also a more than happy Quadvan customer. I have also reached an age that I have no desire to do my own oil changes. The first time after the 4WD conversion I had the local dealer do the oil change there was a comment about the conversion making the oil change difficult. The second oil change I mentioned the problem and the comment was we know, it is not a problem. The service techs are interested in the 4WD conversion and I think like to take on not routine jobs.
Another happy Quadvan customer. but yeah, that oil change is gnarly.. Considering the awesome voodoo they pull off, I can't say its much to blame on quadvan, plus its not much worse then the stock filter situation. My hesitation about the Fumoto is I would like to put a magnetic drain plug on. Humm...
