if i am not mistaken there is a line in the tax form for expenses incurred by you for business or employment purposes. i would check to see if you can deduct the difference from what he pays vs the irs allowed.

in addition you may want to see if he will allow you to go as an independent contractor and then you get to deduct a whole lot more.

the third is to get another boss cause this one obviously sucks at treating his employees fairly.

I will ask my tax guy if there is a way to deduct. Not too interested in going independent, contractors are the first to get cut when the market takes a turn.

You may have missed the fact that I get a generous monthly vehicle allowance. I actually work for an excellent company, better organized and more fair than any company I have ever seen. I can walk into the CEO's office anytime I want and he will listen to anything I have to say. Maybe I'll find a way to show that the extra few cents for fuel benefit the company somehow, like as a mobile showroom or some such.

In the past you could deduct the mileage as part of an unreimbursed business expense.
The 20 cents per mile is way unfair, unless they provide a gas card for business use or provide you a monthly expense allowance.

Now....under the new tax laws you may NOT be able to deduct mileage and car expenses any longer. I have yet to see the new rulings but was told to kiss the deduction goodbye in 2019.
That will hurt many of us that use our vehicles for work.
Fortunately I only use the transit for side jobs and musical gear not a daily means of transportation. My little honda CRV gets 34 mpg.

My wife has a cousin in Italy who does a similar sales job, when he is out of town overnight he often sleeps in his car because his boss won't pop for a motel. But, hey, he gets to eat real Italian food everyday, so it's a wash.

Last fill-up I got 13.5 MPG because I sit in the van a lot with the A/C running, it feels wasteful but the Transit is my office, I'm just not very productive at 120 degrees. That sort of fuel economy pushes me closer to the ledge.

For some reason I saw an old post by @sschefer and wondered where he went, I found his last post and it turns out he sold his Transit and his reasoning did resonate with me:

sschefer: "I was staring at the van the other day and thinking about a 3rd build. Why? Because building them is fun. Then a light bulb went on and I realized that was the only time I really enjoyed having it. Did I want to spend all summer working on that or did I want to go fishing and camping."

Here I am, staring at my own van and thinking about a 3rd build (or 2 1/2). Maybe that's the whole point, and no matter what, I'll always be building one camper or another.

sshefer was a poser, Somebody who buys things to impress other people. His first forum posts were photo's of all of the nice toys he had sitting in his yard, and his last forum posts were photo's of all of his newest vehicles.
I think most of us have bought things to impress other people at some point, But for most of us all it took was some kind of midlife crisis or something for us to wake-up and stop wasting money. But not sshefer, last you hear is he is dying of cancer and then a few months later he shows up with a new house and a new boat, and now a new jeep. sshefer was just another pretender in the latest camper van craze.

Orton may have made an better example of someone who has turned camper van building into an hobby because at least he has shown he will be here for the long haul.

To be perfectly honest, once I'm done with my build I'll likely become scarce on the forum.

But then again, does a build ever finish? It could just as easily turn out that the forum continues to be a valuable resource as I glean and share new ideas for approaching various challenges. Either way, I enjoy participating and hope that my contributions help others with their projects.

This forum would be even better if we could post pictures. ha ha (hoping the mods find a solution for the problem soon)

Plus, what @Eiko said above.
I wanted one but could not bring myself to buying a sprinter, even thought about buying a chevy and cutting the top and raising the roof.
Then came transit but I had to put everything on hold, spent most of my time/$$$ in court getting time with my children. Finally last year I treated myself to my "wants", do I need it? probably not,

I think the fun part is sharing thoughts, helping others, learning from others.

Transit for me = drive anywhere park it, and throw a blanket and sleep on the bench seat. Through couple of sleeping bags and the children can sleep too.

It is good to vent sometimes,
