Pretty easily, depending on one's body movements and clothing, when getting in. I've caught the closed door on pants pockets several times. Have also caught it with a shoe (if you place left foot first in the step well, your right foot swings just past the fuel door).

The time it broke, I had an electronic gadget in my pocket... there was a 3-inch bit of lanyard hanging out, which has one end of a plastic clasp on it. The lanyard had swung just under the bottom edge of the fuel door, with the plastic clasp as anchor, and momentum pulled the door up sideways, against its hinge.

It's a problem for the 2015 or so models. They changed the door design so yours and mine are less likely to get munged.

Caught the gas door on a 2016 once. flung it open.

A few months later I was sliding off the seat and caught the piece below the gas door and pulled it off the van. It was held on with four $4 pins. All four of them were broken so I just got a new piece with the pins installed. With tax it was thirty bucks.

My 2015 had a tab on forward edge of the door and several times I got caught on it as I exited the van. The door is plastic as is the tab. Today in about 15 minutes my fuel door tab was removed with a Dremel and a loose hack saw blade. Less chance of damaging the door.

Today I finally got around to replacing the filler door that the dealership broke when they had my van. It was easy; three screws and a couple snaps hold the housing in place. There's a rubber gasket attached to the filler door frame that just pops over the actual filler pipe without removing the yellow end piece. The body color panel slides off in the direction of the front of the van. The old housing itself seems like there's another screw, but looking at the new one I found out there were several ramped snaps holding it in place, and they popped off without breaking anything once I was confident enough to apply more force. Once the top section is pulled away from the body, you lift UP to get it out from behind the small piece above the rocker panel. Oh, the grey plastic trim directly below the filler door is held by 4 snaps, one in each corner. It popped off without too much effort and nothing broke.

Sorry I didn't take pics.

The old housing was broken at the top plastic hinge. I used someone else's idea and drilled a hole and secured it back in place with a zip tie, and it's working like new. I don't know why they used plastic for the hinges, maybe it's supposed to break away to avoid damaging more expensive parts.

Thanks for the posting. I just broke mine. Did you replace the door with the new design? What is the part number?

Keep in mind, your painted faceplate is the limiting factor. If you have the old piece, with the tab on the forward side, that's what you're stuck with unless you buy that extra new piece. When I broke my door, I got the somewhat revised surround piece and door backing, and actually had to modify it slightly -- filed off 1/16 of an inch or so of material at the position where the tab would rest to accommodate the tab in the old position.

I got the replacement for the 2015, which still has the tab where you can catch it. I think the only difference is the body color panel; and that doesn't come with the housing (you use your old one).
I talked the dealer into giving me a replacement housing since they broke it. They wanted to install it but I insisted NO because I didn't want them to mess anything else up. So, I don't have the part number handy.

If you're not too worried about gas siphoning (I'm not), you can just cut off the tab. It would be easy to add a tab of some kind at the top that gets trapped by the door, too.

The front tab is easy to remove in about 10 minutes with a Dremel. I had removed the tab but still broke the door. Did not have any difficulty opening the fuel door after tab was removed.
