Starting Problem on 2015 Transit 250

Hi everyone, I own a 2015 transit 250 high roof work van. I went out to start it this morning and the engine turned over but wouldn't start. I tried several times with no success. I tried jump starting it even though I didn't think that was the issue as it was turning over pretty strong but just wasn't engaging. I had this issue approximately one year ago and had it towed to a local Firestone. They ran diagnostics on it and checked the battery. They said they tried starting it and it immediately fired up. They said nothing came up on diagnostics and the battery was fine. I haven't had any issues with it again until today.

Has anyone experienced similar issues. I was hoping to diagnose the issue asap as the fastest any local dealer is able to check it is 2 weeks from now. I need to use it well before then and cant be without it for so long if possible.

Any help is appreciated.

There is a possible issue with the throttle valve actuator. It causes the symptoms you describe. Easy fix. Ford fuel pumps are good for about 60k. Another issue that would explain your experience. A year apart is... interesting. Unless it's a diesel. Then forget what I said and sell it if it starts running again.

I'm having this issue if its super cold and wont fire unless you hold the throttle to the floor. I'm stumped. 2015 3.7

Once its running its okay. What/where is this throttle valve actuator?

it's on the throttle body. easy swap. search youtube.

I had the same problem this morning with 50k on the odometer (and I paid it off yesterday, go figure). Would crank just fine but wouldn't start. Had it towed to the local dealer but they said 3 weeks to look at it. Next dealer down the road said it would be done Friday. He said it's probably the fuel pump as he has been replacing a lot on the 2015 3.7L.

I had a starting problem. I had gas so I poured fuel down the intake, the van would start so I changed the fuel pump thinking that had to be the problem. Nope. It was the fuel pump control module. About a 50.00 dollar part from Ford. So dont do what I did and replace the pump. Check that first its alot easier to replace too.

Sorry, I forgot to post. I got the van back the next day. Props to Ducks Mackenzie Ford for the quick diagnosis. They also replaced the driveshaft coupler as well! I included a picture of the service writeup below but after diagnosis, it was determined to be a bad FPCM. My service advisor said that Ford asked them to ship it back to them.

As an afterthought, now that I have been driving it for a week, my gas mileage is about 15% better. Same driving on the same route and I am getting 15.4 MPG vs. the 13 to 13.5 I was getting. Maybe a connection?

Ben -- It controls the fuel pressure. 3.7L should be at 55psi at the rail. Wrong pressure means the wrong amount of fuel is injected. It would account for the mileage difference.

@walkinghispath It is under the vehicle, aft of the subframe, on the right side. On the F150's they hide it in the spare tire well.

I always called it a Fuel Pump Control Module, looking at the 2017 Service Manual it is called the Fuel Pump Driver Module. I never can keep all the acronyms straight.

I had the same problem about a month ago on my ‘15 250.
Cranked and cranked, wouldn’t start. It was a couple days after the first snow of the season. In the 20’s. had to have it towed to the dealership.
At first they said it was the battery- I said no way. It would crank all day. Then they said it was the air filter. They said it was covered with ice.
I told them to please check any other potential causes- as this is my work vehicle, and cannot be without it again.

Temperatures were below zero last week, and didn’t have any problems. Went to start it up this afternoon to load it up for work tomorrow- same issue as before. 24 degrees outside. Checked the air filter- pristine. Luckily for me I am still under warranty, but I cannot afford to be without my van for 1 day!

I will definitely mention the issues some of you have had with fuel pump control modules. Hopefully this is the last of these issues
