CCP questions and confusion

Hi --

12V noobie question here. I'm confused about one vs three CCPs, and the $6.58 kit from Ford to "upgrade" from one to three CCPs.

First, my understanding is that if your van has one CCP, it is protected by one 60amp fuse and there is a single post protruding from the base of the driver's seat. If you have three factory CCPs -- three posts --- each is protected by a single 60amp fuse, but they can be combined (as done for example by Morey in http://moreysintransit.com/ford-tran...ection-points/) to act as though there is a single 180A fuse.

Is this correct?

Now, if you have a single factory CCP and want to "upgrade" to more than 60amps of protection, people on the various CCP threads talk of "adding CCPs". But are they adding two more posts? Or just adding two more fuses to the existing single post (which seems to be what the kit is for)?

Context for my question: I have ordered my 2017 van with the HD alternator and dual AGMs ([email protected]). But I did not order the upfitter switches. And now it appears likely that to have 3CCPs (or more to the point, 180amps of protection for the van batteries, from which I will run some lights and the roof fan, etc) I will have to install an upgrade kit. And what exactly that kit is baffles me.

Thanks for your patience with this noobie question.

I added the kit to mine, it includes the 2 extra posts with 2 extra 60a fuses, so now I have 3 60a posts available. There are a few good threads on how to install the kit, took less than an hour if I recall.

Click here for the Ford SVE bulletin on it.

Fortunately my 12 passenger XLT Wagon has the 250a alternator to provide plenty of juice should I end up needing it.

My guess is that your van will come with 3 cpps.

Less than an hour? that sounds promising. I've now found a picture of the kit and and have a visual of the CCP terminal/posts.

I looked at the cargovanconversion write-up and cringed -- it said four hours, and talked about removing the (single) battery -- something I am not eager to do with dual AGMs.

Thanks.

Yes, his write-up was very helpful and allowed me to get it done quickly without time wasted on guessing & figuring. Pulling the single battery I have was simple and now that I realized I have the HD alternator, will likely add a second battery in there.

Not that difficult. I've added the extra 2 CCP's and could likely do it again in an hour or so. I have only a single battery. If as others have said, you have dual AGM's you should already have three posts. Easy to check. Lift the plastic cover on the thingamajig on the floor left of your driver's seat. If you see 3 posts you don't have just one.

If Ford could find my missing van, I would do exactly that. . Sigh.

Until them I am left to reading and scratching my head as I try to learn the basics of 12v and figure out a plan for my camping van's 12v system.

Fingers crossed that the two AGMs come with the three CCPs. Then one of my first mods will be to duplicate the MoreyInTransit install of a 150Amp circuit breaker before installing and hooking up a MaxxAir fan.

Thanks!

I wish I had read this before wiring up my roof fan. Went under the seat and hooked up my wires to the front battery. Did not see the CCP on the side! Thought it was under the seat. It's on the side! Oh well some things you have to do twice!

GyspyBrewer --

Thanks. If I am reading this correctly then it looks likely that the dual AGMs, even without upfitter switches or auxillary fuse panel -- will have the 3 CCPs/60Amp fuses. If correct this will make my life much easier. I can move on to learning other things about 12V!

i can confirm on my transit which the window sticker lists the dual batteries that it would appear i do NOT have the 3 CCPs unless i'm looking at this picture incorrectly i only see one terminal. my window sticker does not list the heavy duty alternator which makes me go hrrm.
