Weight pre and post conversion

Anyone tracking this? 2016 MR ML T250 empty cargo van with Ecoboost.

Pre: 5260 (1/4 tank fuel)

All paneling, some cabinets, insulation, bed, fridge, 2 person bench seat, water tank (with water), swivel, wood floor, oversized tires, dual coach batteries with steel box, solar panels, hitch and driver. All said, almost 1500 lbs doesn't seem that bad. Still have 1780 lbs of cargo I can haul before I hit the GVWR. Maybe the next rev, I reduce it some more. My panelling is WAY too heavy imho.

Anyone else?

I've never weighed my van. But, I did weigh all the major components of the build. I've added a bit more than 1000 lbs. And, you're right -- there's a lot of spare capacity! I might do it lighter in a revision, someday. Since I weld steel, I relied on that, where I might try aluminum, in the future. My cabinets are framed in 2x2, but, 1x2 could be strong enough for a lot of it.

I need to learn to weld steel! A friend did a recent rig with alumaplast which he water-jetted. Pretty effing cool if you ask me, and beautiful to boot.

I also have sink, shower and 12 gal water tank with all the wiring, plumbing and pump. Mine is a mix of plywood for structural components (cabinetry, bed platform, table) and laminated particle board for the wall paneling, door skins for headliner. Plywood ranges from 3/8”-3/4”, 3/8” for most cabinets, 1/2” for floor, 3/4” for table and bed platform. Plywood is all laminated, and also have lotsa laminated counter top with 3/8”.

Nice ... keeping the weight down.

Stands to reason that, even with the weight under GVWR, every pound you carry increases fuel usage and, to a degree, the handling of the van.

At the same time, an empty van from the factory is probably too light.

Where do you guys go to get your vans weighed?

I did mine at a metal recycling yard. They weigh your vehicle before and after. Tried truck scales a couple times, but the scales didn’t go down that low.

All total about 1,500 pounds of camper build and cargo, I built everything out of 3/4 inch plywood. (About 7 sheets)
You would be surprised how little all of that weight effects MPG, I am averaging 16.2 mostly highway.
And all of that weight makes the Transit rock solid in handling, Last summer I drove across the leading edge of a low pressure zone/tornado in Illinois on I-57 with out problems. (Scary as sht! One semi truck was laid over on its side.)
