I had considered something similar that would pivot at the rear to facilitate pulling from an angle when it couldn't be pulled from straight ahead. I got stalled out on how to protect the low hanging vitals up front without having some kind of skid plate. For now I figured I'd use both ends of a recovery strap hooked to the front lift points and a 2x4 strategically placed to keep it from riding up too high if I got stuck somewhere and couldn't get pulled out from behind .... until something cheap and functional came along.
I do carry a small hitch mount winch, a screw in sand anchor and a marine plow anchor .... just to put a little weight over the rear axle .... ;-]
Good plan! I considered beefing up the OEM front jack points and using some sort of stand-off (like your 2 x 4 idea) to keep the strap from messing up the front bumper, but settled on this hitch design instead. If you go that route, I'd definitely consider reinforcing the OEM tie-down points. While they were intended for transport tie-downs, they're pretty flimsy looking as-is. With the 2-point recovery attachment, I can definitely see them bending toward the center of the vehicle after a recovery or two.
Hi all, hopefully not a dead thread, but did you ever end up producing this mount for your truck? I too would be interested in detailed design information.
