My guess is not much original thought went into the design.

Antennas don't work that way. The long metal thing is the ground. Antenna ariels are insulated from the ground.

Less accessible to vandals as well....

I recall on another forum, someone reporting that the high mounted sprinter antenna BROKE off when a bunch of snow and ice broke free and slid down the front of his sprinter.. So my vote is, I like the location where it is. At least if it breaks, I won't need scaffolding to replace it.

If there was anything about my Transit radio which was remotely similar to anything on my Sprinter radio, I would tear it all out. I'm fine with a bendy antenna. At least it pulls in signal.
ultane and Budsky like this.

I hate the wobbling antenna in my peripheral vision while I'm driving. I don't really care that much about radio reception, is there either a retractable, stubby, cover, or ??? to swap out for the stock wobbly bit?

Has anybody tried any of these shorter antennas?

It would be nice if someone would make a custom shark-fin antenna, for direct replacement.

I'd be skeptical of those 4 antennas, shown, since they say fits 2010-14 Transits. Either A) they mean Transit Connect, or, B) they actually mean European Transits of those years, or, C) they basically mean "fits everything," and the website is not updated with current year text.

I had the same thoughts regarding the models listed.

I pulled mine off and the stock antenna just screws on like many do. So, it's just a matter of thread size which is 1/4-20.

The base diameter measures 1.0"

For now I'm going to just leave mine off as I never use the radio. I only use my iPod or phone for music. I will look for a stubby that fits, maybe one of those that I linked to. I need to see what thread size they are.

Oh, interesting, 1/4-20. There's certainly a bunch of stubby Chinese antennas on ebay. Haven't seen one that specifically mentions 1/4-20, though. Bigger problem is covering that 1-inch base.

Of course, complete replacement is a challenge, due to the angle and size of the base-base.

I do use my radio, so, couldn't afford to put on something shorter, for looks, alone.

I have not had any significant bending or movement of the antenna on my T150 MR up to 70 mph. Just make sure it is tight and do not try bending it to see how much movement you get. Any AM/FM antenna mounted on the side of the vehicle or in the window glass will not get as good reception as an antenna on the roof. Since I work communications equipment all the time, I evaluate antenna performance. I only have 5 antennas mounted on the roof of the van and they range from a few inches tall to 50 inches. Only have to watch out for low clearance areas and just slow down. Parking garages are off limits with the MR anyway.

I have noticed my antenna bent a bit. But it seriously isn't an issue.

The reception is awesome no way it's lower than other vehicles. I pul signals with this I cannot with 2012 F150 or my 2005 Ford. It's a good antenna.

As far as saying it's 10% lower strength, 97% of statistics are made up on the spot....... lol. Really I cannot quantify radio strength by listening to the radio without putting it thru some serious testing. And there are outside conditions which change radio wave propagation.

I ordered this 7" stubby with a 23mm dia base.

I think the base diameter will be about 0.1" too small but it might just look OK if it drops inside of the base mount. I can machine an adapter ring if need be.

For $12 it's worth the gamble. I figured 7" would be tall enough to work suitably for my limited use of radio.
