Anyone have pictures of the cargo van with the rear A/C yet?

#2 ·
StarGazer will have one soon. I know he ordered rear air, I THINK he ordered the cargo van.

#3 ·
I doubt it will be too soon. My vin is 43061 which may be some time out.

Hope it is not in the way too much. My wife does dog shows and uses the one in her Honda mini van all the time. I was going to get the HD alt and the rear AC was only like $500 additional so seemed like a good deal.

Yeah, that's the only reason I originally ordered it. Plus I had wrongly assumed that it included rear heat. I had it deleted from my order and just added the HD alternator instead.

hood, there was an extended discussion about the rear A/C in a Wagon, and how a similar configuration in a Van would affect various DIY builds being planned. orton posted photos and great details, which I will now try to locate.

Here is orton's 10/24 post about the Wagon with rear A/C:

I like the set-up, but a sleeping bag for each rear passenger while I drive at night should suffice. I told my wife about your electric blanket idea and thought I'd incorporate it, but she said she did fine before and really didn't need one.
But I know I can always get the bigger inverter and run a 750 watt heater if the need arises thanks to your input.
How will you wire in the 1000 watt inverter? Directly from the battery terminals ?

#10 ·
Good question. Do not know. Direct to battery terminals with a fuse may be required. The 3 upfitters terminals apparently are 60 amps each. Will have to see what is there.

On the Sprinter for the 600 watt inverter I used the same system that Mercedes used to connect their optional aux. battery.

I just got my transit cargo van with $860 option of rear heat&a/c. I can say i am VERY DISAPPOINTED. No duct work or vents. Just a fan box on the floor. I am currently fighting with dealer to install ducts like in passenger vans. You can inbox me and i will send pic.
Here are the photos mentioned above. Thanks James.

Is it really heat as well or just an extra fan and condenser?

#15 ·
Please let us know if it includes heat and if it does is it out of the fan box?

Epps

Thanks Terry and James.

Oooopphhhhh . . .

That installation would not last long in a construction etc. vehicle. Amazing that Ford would hatch such a dinosaur on unsuspecting buyers IMO.

The rear unit in the floor is just the same as in the Econoline van. In 2000, I ordered a E-250 Extended CrewVan with rear air and it had the air unit in the floor on the left rear of the van. Just had a black plastic housing with a vent at the top of the housing. I eventually got all of the plastic side trim and then took down the roof panel and cutout 2 vents for the back since I only used the second seat for vacations.

So happy my delete ended up being accepted.

Well I too am not thrilled with how this looks. I saw what was in the passenger vans, and wrongly, assumed, it would look similar but perhaps with vents up the wall. this looks like a cheesy walmart type fan in a box??? big after thought??

Have to wait and see how it looks in person.

James, I see you got the wall liners but not the floor. Was that what you ordered? I ordered the premium package and certainly want the rubber floor covering.

Thanks for the pics, and please let us know how it works out.

Dean

Do have to admit that the price for this option sure seemed low/reasonable. Perhaps this is why???

Still probably beats having one on the roof that leaks like the Sprinter system.

This is why I had my friend order a WAGON and then ORDER the BUILDERS PREP PACKAGE so he could get the rear air vents at the top and NO SEATS in the Transit. He initially wanted to order a VAN and rear air, but wanted the vents at the top. From my experience on the Econoline, I called my contact in Dearborn and he told me the rear A/C in the Van would be in the FLOOR. Only get the rear air vents at the top on the WAGON!

To get this changed on the van, you will have to get the plenum to redirect the air upwards and then the duct work to distribute it to the top. Easy to do for the left side; more work to the right side.

I think having it on one side would be fine for myself. Just did not want the box on the floor any larger than it needed to be.

Again will have to wait and see how it looks. Also sort of worried about the floor not being covered. I remember early during the order process it said we had to have carpet to get the rear air but could not delete the vinyl on a van. The dealer thought this was for the up front area so we left it carpet.

Shame when things are so confusing that both customer and dealer are not sure what to expect.

Won't work if he didn't want windows, right?

I see from the pictures that the jack is on the right side rear, it was suppose to be under the passengers seat in the vans. But if they are blowing heat from under it I supose they had to move the jack too. One more thing in the way.

#33 ·
I think the jack is under the passenger seat if you only ordered one battery . . .

Getting the 2nd battery shoves the jack ["yellow zit" per orton, if I recall correctly :)] to the back right IMO.

#35 ·
The second battery is under the drivers seat with the first battery. From what I can tell they are connected together. In other words one is not for starting and the second battery for auxiliary uses. Two batteries act as one large battery. The jack is still under the passenger seat with two batteries.

The jack normally in under the passenger seat. It moves to the back right rear of the van when air heating stuff fills the passenger pedestal. I do not know what is under passenger seat but can make a guess. Since there are refrigerant lines running along the frame back to the rear air conditioning unit on the floor at the back left rear of van, I suspect what is under the passenger seat is the rear heater. They duct the air through the raised floor to floor vents.

Someone here with a van with rear air heating and rear air conditioning hopefully can clarify this guess.

So far it sounds like in the wagon rear air is ducted from the apparatus at the left rear at the floor level to overhead or side overhead vents, while in the cargo van it just blows out of the unit at the left rear, which in both cases receives refrigerant from the regular compressor but has it's own condenser and fan.
Rear heat is distributed from a blower under the front passenger seat via ducts under the sub-floor in the passenger van, but just blown out directly from that unit under the front passenger seat in the cargo van.
So in either case with rear heat (I'm guessing standard in the wagon, included w/rear air in the cargo) the jack is relocated to the right rear side at the floor level.

Help. What is under the front passenger seat in a 350 HR Wagon? With driver f/r a/c controls. Is that where the rear ac/ heat is or is it something that can be moved. Possibly going to interfere with a transfer seat on that side.

What are the dimensions of the rear air unit in the left rear corner of the cargo van? How far does it intrude into the cargo space from the side wall and from the rear door? I will need to install the maximum amount of shelving possible in my cargo van. I am trying to get an idea of the shelving units I need to order.
