Training Vans Touring Dealers



There are 28 vans driven by Ford employees visiting dealers for training purposes.
There was one at my local dealer today. It was a long wheelbase (148") extended diesel passenger van.

Observations:

1. Very comfortable. This one had 10 way power seats.
2. Duel batteries are located under drivers seat.
3. Fuse box in engine compartment as is the computer.
4. DEF fluid filled from hinged door at rear of driver door. Tank under vehicle in front of fuel tank.
5. Fuel filler is behind a door above the DEF door with no-cap fill.
6. Side sliding door running board just bolts on.
7. Rear air conditioner does not sit on roof. Must be two part system.
8. Two openable glass windows on first row seating and two more in back.
9. Large comfortable arm rest built into door plastic cover.
10. Rear axle does have a large sway bar.
11. Lots of space under vehicle for tanks or other conversion stuff.
12. No intermediate stop on sliding door.
13. Overhead storage over windshield is not rigid.
14. There was a fan and some controls inside passenger seat pedestal.
15. There is a raised transmission tunnel between the two seats.
16. Rear doors seem to be much more rigid than Sprinter rear doors.
17. Less dashboard storage than a Sprinter.

Yes. I thought it was very comfortable. I think the seats were the 10 way power seats. Hopefully the manual seats are the same construction without power. One thing that I really liked was the arm rest built into the plastic door covering. Nice and wide and just the right height. Also liked the pull pocket along the top of the plastic door cover to pull the door closed. There was also an adjustable arm rest toward the center of the van. Should be more comfortable than my 08 Sprinter.

Not a big deal. The tunnel is maybe (from memory) 4" high at the dash end and it tapers down toward the back. Both the drivers and passengers feet are lower than the top of the transmission tunnel. Why the concern?

That's exciting! Tilt wheel? More ergonomic steering wheel position than a T1n/Promaster?

Thanks for the update! Our ford dealers are all equally clueless... Tried to get info on the Transit and they printed me the Transit Connect brochure... hardly knew what the Transit was, pointed me to some Isuzu step van and suggested maybe that's what I was talking about haha

The Chevy dealership actually knows more than Ford at this point (and will likely sell more of these than our Ford dealership, since Chevy has a HUGE commercial lot in addition to the consumer side)

Tilt and in/out. Not at all like the Promaster/Volkswagen bus steering wheel location. I could even get far enough away from the wheel to be comfortable. Drove too many Alfas (6) and got used to the Italian driving position. Just sitting in it made me think it would be more comfortable than my 08 Sprinter. At least the controls will be far less confusing. Never have figured out some of the Sprinter stuff.

Dave, nice that you got to see the passenger van version...

What I'm kicking around in my head is a passenger van and taking out the seats past the 2nd row, and using that space for very light camping for two people; no shower, no permanent stove, etc - just a convertible bench/bed and table, power, cabinets around the roof. Would mostly be a space to get away for writing, relaxing, etc. Windows on both sides with lots of light and views would be great.

The 2nd row seats would be for an occasional 3rd or 4th person - for occasional day trips.

From what you observed, would what I'm contemplating make any sense? Did it have a driver's side sliding door? Comments?

From the ordering info I've seen on Edmunds and Nada I don't believe the passenger wagons have an available driver's side slider.
Plenty of errors on these sites though, so who knows.

What you want to do would work. It would also work with a cargo van with full windows. Maybe buy a seat convertible into a bed for the second row seating. Cargo would be less costly.
Why a double slider? Why would you need that?
