An analysis needs to be done on how much driving you're going to do vs how much living] you're going to do. Sure, the mpg drops if you're driving above 65mph, and if the frontal area is larger and airflow is hampered by rooftop stuff; but if you're not driving hundreds of miles each day the savings on fuel cost are negligible compared to the utility of a comfortable living space.

When you look at the numbers, if you drive less than 15-20k a year, the difference in annual cost of 15mpg vs 20mpg isn't that great. ($2500 15k x 15mpg @ $2.50/gal vs $1875 @ 20mpg). $625. $52 a month more. Wouldn't it be worth $2 more a day to be able to stand up, and have all the storage and living space you need to be comfortable on an extended trip?

If you're like me, and your van is your ONLY vehicle, you make compromises. I'm opting for an MR; but mainly because of maneuvering height and the rarity (thus extra cost) of used HR wagons. I wouldn't hesitate to get an HR wagon if one came along at the right price with the right features. HR is about 5-6" taller than my current van, only 2-3" counting the racks.
