What did you name your van, and why?

What did you name your van, and why?

I notice that folks give their van a name, just like a boat. I like that. Names give meaning, maybe personal, maybe whimsical. Címon now, youíve got a story, so spill it. Donít be shy. Iíll startÖ.

So, about that Red ThingÖ

Weíd like to blame Delta Airlines for giving us those thin cheap red courtesy blankets. We used them as curtains in the old Transit Connect, and they moved over to the BIG A$$ VAN. Thatís how we first referred to our new Transit.

80/20 has red end caps and t-slot covers. We think they look better than black.

My Xmas wish list was for little goodies for the vanÖ.cheap pots&pans, utensils, can opener, stove lighter. Got lots of little red stuff from Santa. We use plastic Red Solo Cups (thereís a country song in there somewhere). Found those Milwaukee tool bags and pouches. Heavy duty canvas and zippers. And red! Irresistible! I mighta got a little carried away. Donít Drink & Shop.

But it wasnít until our trip to Tonopah, Nevada that we knew we had to name our van after a prostitute. A murdered prostitute. You see, back in the 1890ís, Tonopah struck rich. Boom town overnight. The Queen of the Silver Camps. Rich.

They built a 5-story hotel, with a bar that dirty miners have been bellying up to for over 100 years. .44 caliber bullet hole in the elevator door. The Mizpah is an elegant hotel in a small Nevada town in the middle of nowhere. Restored with period furnishings, cafe, steakhouse, fine wine list, great bar, friendly folks. We stayed there. Whatís not to love?

And itís alleged to be haunted by the ghost of a prostitute murdered by a jealous lover who was apparently unclear on the concept of what Working Girls actually do for a living.

We named our van in her honor.

Meet The Lady in Red.

Well that's an, uh, intriguing story to that name.

I've come up with several names, and none have stuck, well not yet. The Guerovan, The KMAG YOYO (google it, I got it from the Hayes Carll song, but it fits for an escape vehicle), The Mothership. My wife is far better at coming up with good names, she named our dog and both kids and I have to say she hit the target for each one. Maybe I should put her on the task.

"The Van", and there is an interesting story about how it got it's name. Walking outside and looking at our driveway, I saw that there was the van, and an old Passat. Well, it got me to thinking, we should have a way to differentiate between the two when having both casual and formal conversations. after considering it for a while, I called it "the van" because it's the only van we have.

The Shmoo is named after the classic cartoon character in my avatar. He could make himself into anything and he is white. The Transit's car-like handling and being able to haul a ridiculous amount of stuff reminded me of Shmoo. I also loved this character and knew my kids would be into the name.

Eggzactly! What this world needs is a little more whimsy!

I like the Shmoo concept van, and the Wikipedia brings back memories of Li'l Abner and the Dogpatch community. Shmoos just want to please, are tasty and boneless, give milk, lay eggs, and are good with children. Now that’s some whimsy.

I liked the Pogo cartoon characters poling their little jon boat thru the swamp. Their boat had different names on each side. One side was “USS Andrew Jackson” and the other was “Slippery Jack”.

Hey that just might work on a van!

Call it the Transit.

For old folks it helps to have a hint with the name written on the door.

My van is "Fish Finder" and my boats are "Line Stretcher", "Pole Dancer" and "Drifter". My best friend is a canine and his name is, of course, "Buddy".

Garage
I gave it a name because of this forum only, and after a couple of other tries I named it the "Polar Bear" for obvious reasons. I hope it tracks next winter like a Polar Bear or all in vain.

Debating how much of the lettering and badging I want to remove. I may just leave "TRANS" on the back, and wear lipstick while driving. Or maybe "RAN IT" with a little pic of the grand Canyon above. Still looking for an interesting thing to take the place of the "Ford" badge on back and grill.
