Why bother with stealth?

So many members are building vans for "stealth camping", which is just sleeping/living in your van in the city.

Why bother?

There are rows of motorhomes and vans and minivans and stationwagons parked on Bay Area streets with people living in them, not bothering to hide the fact. As a result, many cities have started to ban vehicles over a certain size (San Raphael for example) being parked AT ALL. Even the 148MR exceeds the maximum size limit, so stealth or not, you can't sleep there.

Is there some advantage in other places to limiting yourself to a stuffy metal box as a house?

While it appears to be a choice for most on this website, I assure you the previous 8 years hit many people very hard. Seniors are living in their cars and if lucky they have a van and young people, unable to afford apartments are also embracing the mobile lifestyle. (The younger ones do this easier of course, and often work online anyway.)

This is a choice for me. I'm hardly stealth though, HR lwb, EL in metallic gold but I will enjoy being left alone streetside if that's where I get "stuck" for a night.

The trend for vehicle buying is VAN buying and maybe some cities are cracking down, others will learn to adjust and make more spaces larger for the vans and their $ spending visitors?

PS I've seen some write ups on 2 cities with van-banning... and they will probably change their tune with the first handicapped person who sues! Hopefully it won't be me

Stealth in Hawaii.

Aloha. "We're number one"! In percentage of houseless folks in the USA. I lived at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Lagoon on Waikiki Beach for five months. Not bad at all. "Housecars" are illegal here, VW campers are OK, so "campers" use POS POVs. NO stealth, but tolerated. Some of our beaches look like refugee camps. Come vi$it! Oahu has THREE freeways that are part of the National Highway System. H-1, H-2, and H-3. Drive on over?

I don't plan on parking on city streets or living in my van but I would like the option to sleep in a Walmart parking lot or somewhere else where raising attention would be bad.

I also plan to haul my valuable motos inside and do not want to advertise. I am going for the power company look lol.

You once had H1a and H1b but they fixed it. I was stationed at Hickam for 2 years. I always used to laugh at car thieves on the island. I mean seriously, just take the bus.

I took my son on a tour of East Coast Colleges. Only paid $25 in lodging at a campground and 2 nights paid in a state park to camp in the 12 days on the road. Being a school teacher, money is tight especially with a son getting ready for college. So between friends driveways, college parking lots, Walmart, and tourist centers it has been awesome. Stealth camping, not so much since I have 2 yippy dogs but very doable otherwise. Saves a ton of money!

yeah why bother with stealth? it has became such a fad now with everyone doing it that it is no longer really stealth! for me it is more of a cosmetic thing if that is the right word? here in mississippi every adult male drives a pickup truck! if you see any cars or minivans at all it is the wife's transportation. (sexist yes but here we are still living in the last century!) i got my transit pimped out with all of the best exterior commercial van accessories to fool at least some of my friends into thinking it is my work truck since it is my every day driver. (since vans here might be considered not what a real man drives or a long haired hippy vehicle!) that full aluminum with sides ladder rack does a good job oh hiding the roof vent and heater exhaust pipe and the solar panels too, since most people here do not even know what a solar panel looks like! (we are proud of having the single largest nuclear power plant in the world (also operating at 125 percent of the rated capacity) and we do not need any of them **** hippy windmills or solar panels!) i got industrial duty running boards on the transit too, if you slip and fall on those you will be going to the hospital for stitches!
the real reason for buying a transit van and the camper conversion: for visiting far away family and old friends with possible extended stays in there driveways or streets, so stealth will help some in the street out front of there houses. then a mix of campgrounds, BLM land and some stealth here and there during trips to save a little money.

Stealth could backfire on ya if a thief thinks you have a contractor's van. White cargo vans = tools inside. If it looks like an RV they have to assume there is someone inside who will at least call the cops. Or, maybe he's got a loaded 9mm.
