Factory 4wd on 2019 Transits!

Hi all,

I've been in the market for a new transit to convert to 4wd thru Quigley or Quadvan. One of the dealers I've been working with recently told me that at a ford meeting for dealers ford announced that they will offer factory 4wd on 2019 transits. This has me second guessing buying one now. Can anyone confirm this?

That's quite possible, but I would not hold my breath or hold off on getting something today.
Even if it is true, you could have 3+ great years in what you get now, then trade for a 2019/2020.

In 1985 I really, really wanted a factory 4wd van to convert and ordered a Bronco instead and in all these years since, none of our US manufacturers have determined that there was enough market to justify it (for them).

Many of us think it is a great idea, but they have to look at the entire market. It would be awesome if Ford was able to do that in 2019, but I would cross that bridge (or stream, in 4x4) when I got to it.

2019?! 2019?! How about 2017!

I agree with asdrew. It's all pie-in-the-sky. Putting off a purchase, waiting for the unlikely prospect of a factory 4X4 in 2019, is probably going to lead to a huge disappointment. Carpe diem! Get a conversion, today, and enjoy the ride.

By 2019, tires and wheels could be obsolete

We could all be piloting "Jetson" type vehicles. Or hover craft models.

Buy now and enjoy your vehicle.

Just because Ford may announce something does't mean it will happen, remember the 2014 model year launch of a vehicle in production for over 20 years in Europe? Well that got changed to 2015 for the Transit.

With all of that in mind, the 2015 Transit was suppose to have a late delivery for dual sliding cargo doors. That was suppose to be available for the 2016 but it turned out to be a late delivery for the 2016 models, a year later. That was for just adding a simple door to the other side (probably years before that in Europe). So imagine what it would be like to add a 4wd system. I hate to get first year anything but there are always exceptions. It's all rumor, so I don't think I'd put my money on it. I'd either keep what I'm driving for another 4-5 years or buy now, enjoy a new van and if the 4wd finally shows up, trade up.

That's good advice, thanks guys. Tough call though because in 3 years I'll have the van setup like I want it and won't want to sell. Anyone else heard about factory 4wd?

I'd bet it won't be 4WD but will be AWD- they already offer that on the Transit in other countries.

I pulled over for a break in Kayenta, Arizona a few weeks back and there were 8 or 9 4X4 Sprinters...all different colors. It was a convoy led by a ratty, older passenger Sprinter. They all had Michigan plates and the drivers, etc. gathered around them looked like southern California surfer dudes but they all were speaking Spanish...kinda weird, eh?

I tried to avoid it, but got stuck behind them all for about a half hour heading west, towards the Grand Canyon. I took a pic of them in the parking lot but the sun washed it out. Those vans do look nice...all jacked up like that with big tires.

I'd put a TRUMP bumper sticker on it, but I'm quite certain it would be vandalized.

That's true, but with the next one you'll know just where you want to go with it, and you'll have lots of experience under your belt.

Agree -- if it happens at all I think it will likely be the AWD Transit similar to the one sold in Europe.

My concern would be that if Ford introduces a refined factory AWD Transit by 2,019, that trying to "trade up" may get expensive. Previous AWD/4WD conversions may depreciate in price quickly.
