Any of you who were past sprinter owners and on the forums will remember all the times we heard "next year is the year for the 4wd" and I think the first time I read that was 2008 and then in 2015 they showed up. So don't hold your breath, until you see it and Kansas City is pumping them out, its not a sure thing.

Garage
I waited for 6 months, and finally was forced to just accept what was available when they kept putting off the sliding dual doors.....it drove me nuts. They kept saying they were right around the corner.......then still didn't come out for 9 more months after I took a transit out of inventory.

The best indication of timing, in my opinion, will be how well Sprinter AWD vans sell. If the take rate on AWD Sprinters is high, Ford will react much quicker with their own AWD/4WD.

Doubt that the Sprinter ratio of 4 x 4 to 2 wheel drive purchases would be a very reliable ratio for Ford use. Sprinter is the only van with 4 x 4 from the manufacturer. Van buyers have the choice of four 2 wheel drive vans. How many of the Sprinter 4 x 4 buyers would have picked a different brand if they all had the 4 x 4 option.

What should be interesting to Mercedes is the ratio of diesel to gas engines sold by Ford. Suspect Mercedes will soon offer a gas option again.

My understanding when I was shopping Sprinters in Oct 2015 was that Mercedes was only allocating 1600 or 1700 4x4 Sprinters per year to the U.S. market, and I was quoted June/July 2016 delivery for a van ordered back then because I had to get in line for an allocation. If you only offer a few, and sell every one, it's very hard to get meaningful data off that; maybe there's a huge untapped market, and maybe you're catching most buyers that want 4x4's; hard to tell without market research or making more. In my case, I passed as I didn't like the 4" lift on an already high van, and not being able to get the 4.18:1 gearing with 4x4.

I didn't buy the 4wd sprinter due to the transfer case issues the lack of negotiation off the msrp, and the diesel motor is the only option. Ford has a real opportunity to kick up the transit sales but it won't be cheap. They will have to do all the crash tests over again and get certified. A 4wd transit with an Ecoboost from the factory would be sweet.

The 4x4 Sprinter on a lot and available for sale was a unicorn. When such a rare thing appeared, everyone talked about it. Nearly all the 4x4 Sprinters were pre-sold because demand was high. The percentage of people who want 4x4 vans is pretty small, and I would think Ford would also only have a limited amount made and for sale in the USA when it happens.

If they build it I will buy it. I could get rid of one of my vehicles if they made me a 4X4 Van.

Offer the 4x4 would be another reason to go with the transit over other vans.

I don't think I could emotionally take another hit on my MPG. 15-16 seems like right out of the 1970's already. An American market 4x4 Ford van would probably only be in the 10-12mpg range at best.
