A couple of small problems at 45,000 miles

Next week, I will be dropping off the Transit so the dealer can take a look at a couple of issues before the warranty runs out this Summer.

First is the rubber coupler at the back of the transmission is cracking:

The other is that we have water coming in where the heater box mounts to the firewall. This bus usually gets washed at least five times a week weather permitting so this morning when the driver was washing it, she noticed there was water on the passenger side floor. I popped open the glove box and dropped it open to look at the cabin air filter (that it didn't come with) and it was fine, but as I looked back at the lower, right corner at the firewall, I saw water drip down. I didn't take a picture. Maybe later today when she gets back. I looked at the HVAC intake that seals against the hood and it was dry inside so it must be leaking at the seal between the intake snorkel and the firewall.

A giubo! Haven't seen one since I used to work on old BMW 2002s many years ago. But then, haven't done much RWD since then either.

Does seem a bit odd that it would be cracking already. Though perhaps the diesel and passenger loads provided the extra stress needed.

There typically isn't alot of weight. Typically a heavy load would be 6 passengers, so 1300#-1400#. Max capacity which we have only reached once or maybe twice is 11 passengers with luggage, so 2400#-2500#. And it's not a city route, it's a highway route so it's not stop and go traffic. Also, out 2005 Sprinter has a similar coupler and it's fine at 270,000 miles and I know the previous owner drove it hard with big loads.

I think that it's just a weak design that needs to be watched. If the second one starts cracking at 40,000 miles after it's installed, they obviously have troubles.

Thanks

Well, some people think I'm funny anyway.

I have a sticky on my computer to remind me to get one from the dealer.

Just called them and it is not available. They don't show it in their parts catalog. I need to track down someone from Europe and see if they can find a part number there.
