I tow and use tow haul often. I did notice it engine brakes with my camper attached.

The tow/haul only works when in D. Not M.

I use it often on twisty roads to keep my foot of the brake (saving brakes).

I would never use it on snowy or icy roads. Just use the brakes. A downshift could lock up the wheels pretty quick and put you sideways into oncoming traffic.

You just need to push tow/haul button. you don't need to use manual mode. it will use 'hill descend mode'

Ok until further notice I am totally confused. I would like to think that no matter what gear I am in the vehicle sensors, processors and servos would try to keep the vehicle on track but I could be wrong.

Descending a hill in first gear seems a bit extreme, unless its a **** of a hill. Try button shifting up to second gear before descending.

I used Tow/Haul mode on my Chevy van (5 speed no manual mode) when driving on snow and ice packed highways to prevent unwanted downshifting. At speeds of 45-55mph T/H would keep me in 4th gear longer. With the Transit I can manually select 4th or 5th depending on the speed I am driving.

Just shifting to first gear in manual without tow/haul does keep the gearbox in first gear.
If I remember correctly it will shift if RPMS exceed the max for the gear.

Here's a concept…I read the manual…this is encouraging even though they don't call it "Hill Descent mode"

Tow/Haul (T/H) (If Equipped)
Tow/Haul delays transmission upshift to
reduce the frequency of transmission
shifting.
The system provides engine braking in all
forward gears when the gearshift lever is
in drive (D). Engine braking helps you to
slow and control your vehicle when
descending a grade.
Depending on trailer load and driving
conditions, the transmission may
downshift when descending a grade.
Downshifting will depend on the amount
of vehicle braking applied.

Tow/haul works great descending a hill at some speed and will down shift attempting to keep the speed you had at the top of the hill. Use it regularly for engine braking.

If I start from a stop at the top of a hill in first gear automatic with the tow/haul mode on, the transmission will up shift every time as I gain speed.

If I start from a stop at the top of a hill in first gear manual (tow/haul does not work in manual), most of the time it will remain in first gear. Interesting that sometimes it does upshift to second when still in first gear manual. Have not figured out why it works most of the time but not always.

Pointer shows what gear you are in. Both in automatic and manual.

In automatic when you first push the down shift button nothing changes. Second button push puts you in 5th then each button push moves you to a lower gear (if you are not going to fast for that gear).

Going back up each button push moves you up a gear. If you want to go back to fully automatic just holding the button down will get you back to automatic without going through the gears.
