Cargo lights....

For the life of me can't figure out the logic behind the cargo lights.

Specifically the three way switch, off/on/door by the mirror does not seem to control them fully. I can turn them on, but I cannot keep them from coming on.

When I hit "unlock" on the key fob they come on, no matter what position the three way switch is in.

I am tempted to highjack the 4 fixtures in the back, disconnect them from the chassis system and tie them to my house system, with regular on/off switches.....The front two as "working lights" in the living area, the back two as "workshop lights".....

Would the CAN-bus have an episode if I did that?

CAN-bus doesn't seem to care. I have all 4 disabled, and I know some others have done the same, or, wired the lights into a house system, as you have mentioned.

I unplugged all 4 cargo lights in my 148" WB not extended van. Relocated all 4 and powered them with on/off switches from the house battery. They do not seem to have a polarity requirement.

I put an inline switch for mine, keep them off most of the time. There is a thread somewhere that explains how to tie into the fuse block under the steering wheel area.

Be aware that the interior lights are negatively switched, as are several circuits in the van appear to be for some reason. I think it's the white wire with blue stripes which are negative on the cargo lights.

I wired up mine so that the interior lights switch from either the standard cargo switch or 2 3-ways so i can manually switch on the lights or let them operate with the dome light.

OK, so I was reading that "other thread "this morning and what I'm getting from all the discussion is the white wire with the stripe just needs to be open for no lights and grounded to have lights stay on all the time and connected as is for van control. Is this correct?

I too am totally confused about how to manage the behavior of the cargo light to something logical, especially for camping.

Can someone please post link to the "other thread?" I haven't been able to find it. Then I can become even more confused!

To add to this, a switched ground means to me that you are removing the ground wire from the light to turn it off. So the light has power when its off, just no ground. So if the ground wire coming from the light is grounded by another wire to ground coming from the switch that I add it's going to stay on until I turn off that switch. And if I open both the existing switched ground and the ground wire with my added switch it's not coming on.
