Lightbulb Switchback style bulb for turn signal mirrors

194 DUAL COLOR SWITCHBACK STYLE BULB FOR TURN SIGNAL MIRRORS
Not sure if this has been mentioned before but for me a long search has finally ended. This w5w/194 size LED bulb (with the normal 2 conductor socket) will output the normal amber turn signal with one DC polarity and white light (out the projector end) with the opposite DC polarity. My thoughts are for the mirror signal lights to illuminate as white puddle lights for a period after remote door unlock or doors opening (like my old Explorer Sport mirror lights) Also to illuminate white when vehicle is in reverse for additional side/backward illumination. A single lock-out sort of reversing relay or a couple of relays with diode banks would probably do the trick. I will look for a solid state polarity reversing solution.

I have found only one version so far at http://www.autolumination.com/194.htm for $10 each, and have a couple on order. way cool!

LED white light on mirror.

Hi,
Sounds pretty clever.

I have the long mirrors with lights.

I have thought of mounting some LED flood lights to the mirror arm. This is kinda like the Jeep Wrangler idea where LED aux lights are mounted near side view mirrors. Still have not figured out how to route the 12 volt and Grnd wires, but it should be doable. Since wire AWG can be 20 AWG since current to LED is not more than about 2 amps for a 4x5W= 20 Watt Pro Comp LED flood light.

Lo & behold the new F150 has a mirror mounted white LED sidelight option available!

A friend has a new 2016 GMC pickup, and there are very bright LED's in the ends of the mirrors that light the ground behind you very well for backing up. I've driven his truck and it does make backing up a lot easier at night.

For your solid state relay needs, you might be able to use these.. http://www.3rdbrakeflasher.com/timer...adbe5751c00886 I have three of them now. Besides delaying the B-B charger, I use them to time the interior lights and my water pump. They have a trigger lead also so I think they'll work for what you're trying to do.

Thanks I downloaded the manual. I have worked with a lot of these multi-mode timers in my business before it was fashionable to include built-in optional timer functions. What we need is a positive lockout when we reverse polarity, we definitely do not want short circuits.

I imagine a scenario might be considering the white light mode would override the signaling mode. There are times where you would get conflicting calls for both modes. I am thinking the IDEC smart relay could easily handle this function along with other duties in the van. Even that though could present both polarities during a reboot or programming error of some sort so I will be looking to design some sort of positive lockout so only one polarity can be presented to the bulb.

The van already provides most of the outputs we need (turn signals, emergency flashing, backup, door open interior lights, remote unlock timed interior lights) maybe two DPDT sensitive relays (one for each bulb) with the coils wired to all the white light functions, diode isolated from each other would do the trick. The default signaling amber LED polarity would route through the relays at rest.

One note on the Idec smart relay (which is a micro PLC) it would be all off when the car is off. It loads it's program and runs when the ignition is on/engine running so it would not be of use for remote unlock, etc. I am going to have a Viper 5807 remote start installed and will request a separate timed voltage output for the puddle lights upon unlock and door open so it is not tied to the interior lights when I am heading down the road.

Sorry for all the revisions when it got dark outside I realized I had timed interior lights upon remote unlocking.

The little w5w/194 switchback bulbs arrived today I will try to find a test socket somewhere and post a video with a link showing how they fair the white light/amber light test.

Hmm, looking at the picture looks like alligator clips is all I need.

Every make any progress on this? Any idea how far you have to go to find an interior light signal? Maybe I should be running a 3rd wire down the mirror arms while I'm doing my signals ;-)

Although I have to say that a separate light, maybe down underneath the mirror cowl (against the body) almost seems better. The mirror lights can be a little blinding on approach, and seem pretty forward oriented.

Dead of Winter day dreaming. We are finally heading up to our lake place where I have my shop and I plan to dig into a lot of things among the many chores that will greet me when we arrive. We have actually opened up there in June and found pockets of snow still on the ground. I especially want to find out if there are truly two versions of the front headlight assembly as some folks are claiming they have clear lenses where the dual color DRL LED's would go and mine look like they have amber lenses.

k,

Another way you could check is to take the amber bulb out of your turn signal and see if the lens still looks amber, or if it is just a reflection. I keep looking but haven't seen another headlight assembly with an amber lens for the turn signal like yours.
