Interesting

My dealer installed a flat 4 pin on my van, but the wires running to the tail lights are fed up through the black access covers under the van......much cleaner installation compared to the wires in the video running up each edge of the rear step.

I watched the how to video that High Top mentioned. What is the reason for the small powered box for the flat four trailer wiring? Can the conventional wiring be used. My trailer is all LED lighting so there isn't much of a load. Thanks for any replys

The box is some sort of signal regulator - these vans have CANBUS wiring systems that rely on sensors/processors sending signals back and forth to one another.

If you simply tap in additional wires you would change the voltage drop or current draw and confuse the computers.

That is my basic understanding!

The box has its own power supply and only uses the signals from the wiring to tell it to power your trailer lights instead of the traditional way of actually using the vehicle wiring to power the additional trailer lights.

Keeps the current draw to a minimum. Generally, if your vehicle has incandescent bulbs you can hook up a set of LED lights to it and it won't matter.

I have an early 2015 Transit. After some research, I decided that I didn't have whatever Ford trailer light signal box people on this forum were talking about. This led me to buy this aftermarket wiring connector: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N25DXQ8. This is basically the same type of connector installed in @High Top 's video. This connector kit uses factory style connectors to splice into the brake and turn signal lights. The connector kit's box uses the signals from the factory lights, relays and a dedicated power wire from the chassis battery to drive the trailer lights. This system is simple and fairly easy to install. Unless you need trailer brakes, I would recommend this system, even if you have the special Ford box.

I doubt a lot of the stuff some of these companies a saying. If I were to buy one of those boxes the dremel would come out and I would some exploratory surgery. What would the computer need to know if something was plugged into the trailer wiring? Braking I can see, it might affect the anti-lock system. Look at the potential profit if there is just a cheap relay if even that in those boxes. If the rear tail wiring is so sensitive on these vans why didn't they use LED's?

The box is a break out box that excludes the third brake light. If you just vampire tap into the existing wiring without the break out box, your third brake light will flash when you turn on your turn signals.

that is just it, the canbus is tied into all of the lighting wires and there is 200 hertz Pulse Width Modification on the lighting wires which causes problems with LEDs, it will destroy electronic fluorescent light ballasts used for replacement cargo lights. it really is the computer age and the brain is tied into all things electric in the transit!

Yep! I think all the light controls go through the PCM modle first.
I bought the Ford trailer tow wiring kit and had one issue in the dual trailer connector
did not come with a mounting bracket because Ford built it in to the Tow hitch.
I bought a Draw-Tite 75912 Max-Frame Receiver and made my own mounting bracket
to match the Ford tow kit connector and the mounting holes on the Draw-Tite hitch.
