Back Up Camera

I added a 2nd Camera and Installed a review mirror LCD.
Camera:
Amazon Amazon

Mirror:
Amazon Amazon

When the van is filled with kids, it is impossible to see out the back. The camera was a standard licence plate mounted camera. The camera install was no issue, but the review mirror took some modifications. The Transit does not use a standard mount. I had to remove the bracket from the factory mirror and modify it to fit the new LCD. This made a huge difference when driving. I can turn it on/off from the mirror.

I am waiting for one of these to be available to replace the camera I have now.

I contemplated a new rearview mirror with built-in monitor as well, but need a display with multiple video inputs for other cameras as well.

see CAR ELECTRONICS – PART I
CAR ELECTRONICS – PART II

The Vardsafe accessories look quite nice and are installed at the rear roof line, which will give you a better backwards view.

Did you have any difficulty attaching the wires?

Nice. With the low mount can you see the bumper and still see far enough back to make it useful as a rearview mirror?

The factory backup camera is a fish-eye lens, but it does provide a great view of the ball for hooking up a trailer! Way to easy!

The Model LCD has 2 inputs. There are other models that have more inputs. The same company makes more.

The video makes a huge difference for visibility. There are other manufactures that make cameras that mount on the 3rd Brake light too (just not for our van too).

Wire hookup was not an issue, but I was a Professional Car Audio installer and aircraft mechanic in my youth.

Is it not possible to have the display show the backup camera while driving forward? I rented a Toyota with a rear view camera in the stereo like the Transit's 6.5" and I could set the display to show the backup camera while driving. I'm ordering a Transit as a family rig and also hated that I could see anything useful in the rearview mirror. I wish I would have taken more time to test that now.

If you get the MFT there is a hardware hack to allow that.

Like tricking the radio to think you are in reverse? Does anyone know if the radio keeps playing whatever was on before you put the truck in reverse, or does the radio stop? If it keeps going, I wonder if you could make one of the upfitter switches cause the radio to think the truck is in reverse. That way you could go back and forth with ease.

Has anyone done the hack to use the backup camera as a rear view while traveling forward?

Otherwise, I'll need to just wait for delivery to test it out...

More of an overall system mod. Allows GPS changes on the fly, etc. Don't have a link but it's been posted here.

I haven't found the link for an MFT hack to enable the rearview camera/monitor in gears other than reverse. Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

Thanks!!!

Rick
