Vanistan - a minimalist diy camper

i bought a 2016 short wheelbase, medium roof transit this summer.

went through consumer reports, which was awesome. you just put in what you want (i didn't want any extras) and three dealerships email you with offers. did all the negotiation via email. yay!

i am going to make it a minimalist camper.

i made curtains for behind the seats. and put one of those rubber mats on the floor.

a friend of mine is helping me with the bigger projects.

so far we installed a Fantastic in the roof and a 4" drain hole in the floor. and a swivel for the passenger seat. we discovered a 4 ton jack under there. luckily you can still access it with the swivel seat installed.

i am still working on the details of the solar setup. i am thinking of going with a DC only system because I am mainly just going to run the fantastic and a little fridge off it. i have a small goal zero setup for charging laptop and cell phone.

i am leaning towards flexible solar panels because they could be mounted on a roof rack and i can still use it for occasional light loads like a kayak.

and lithium battery.

thanks klp!

yes, ventilation. also for those times when you want to sweep the floor and not open the doors for stealth camping purposes.

How do you use the swivel with the curtains in place? I am trying to figure out how to cover the windshield and front drive/passenger windows but still keep the cab space open.

chasing swell in the green 2015 transit 150 cargo with glass all around when there's no waves I pedal 🏄🚵

Thanks for the Consumer Reports tip - I didn't know they had introduced that service. Look forward to seeing your progress...

Welcome. We have the same van and are also planning a ~200Ah DC system for a fridge, fan, and lights. We can help you with a solar install that will allow you to carry a kayak.

i can't because the curtains are mounted behind the driver's seat. i have seen some window covers that are stuck on the outside the window, but not on the inside. i am still looking for a window shade that fits the front window. i'll post a pic later

This might be what you're looking for; it's what we plan to use. They are available here: https://vanupgrades.com/collections/...insect-screens , but I noticed that similar shades are available for less on E-bay.

Low-E SSR is great for cut your own window shades. We have developed templates for the windshield, cab, sliding and rear door windows. We stock the Low-E so I suppose we could cut the pieces out as well. You can attach decorative cloth to the inside for a more cozy look. PM me please.
